Shady Lane Barn (Submitted by Lois Vasey)

Here is a posting for Linc's Link blog. We are also attaching two pictures; one of the Shady Ln barn taken recently and another of the house which we think was taken in 1905. My Mother is on the right side of the balcony and I don't know who is on the left.

I have not heard very many stories about life at Shady Lane when Abraham & Mary Effie Scott lived there with the children (Ed, Ruth, Monroe, Silvey, Ralph and Doris). I do remember my mother, Ruth, showing me the stable where her “little pony” was kept. And, how she and a girl friend would ride to school—each taking quarter-of-a-mile turns walking and riding the pony.

She also remembered when Silvey was a baby in the buggy and the children (Ed, Ruth and Monroe) took a walk up the road north of the house where there was a hill. The big memory was letting the buggy glide down the hill giving baby Silvey a fast ride. I’m sure that was embedded in her mind because they probably got a proper scolding for that.

My parents were married in the living room, under the stained glass window at Shady Lane. That window is still there and can be seen on the north side of the house. I tried to purchase that window several years ago, but had no luck.

I’d love to hear other stories the first cousins may have of life on the farm.
