Ron Dryden shares some family photos

Glenda made some rice pudding, which is her brother Marvin
Dryden's favorite dessert. Marv, who lives in Hawaii, was not able to
attend the reunion, however, this picture of Harold, Glenda and Ronald
Dryden with Marv's favorite dessert was sent to him for him to enjoy. Marv really appreciated that.

Marv went to a high point in Honolulu, the Punch Bowl, where he looks to the East. It appears he may possibly be looking for a way to get back to Kansas to enjoy some of his favorite dessert.

Glenda enjoyed some quality time with her dad.

Ronny and Glenda Schuft (Dryden) traveled from Glencoe Minnesota to Hutchinson Kansas in August to visit family and Glenda's dad, Bob Dryden.

JOHN SCOTT TO RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION WITH THE "ANGELS IN ADOPTION™ AWARD (John Scott son of Ralph and MaryK)

John Scott has been recognized by Congressman John Boozman of Arkansas as set forth in the following release

It is my honor to nominate Honorable John R. Scott, 19th West Judicial District, Division IV Circuit Court Judge as the Angel in Adoption for the Third District of Arkansas. Judge Scott has heard 578 adoption cases since becoming Circuit Judge. Judge Scott states, "Successful adoption cases are some of the most rewarding and enjoyable work that I do because the result is a stable and loving environment for someone who has not previously enjoyed that experience." He is truly an advocate for adoption, creating a warm and comfortable environment for the adoptive parents, their attorneys and most importantly, the children who are becoming their new family members. Judge Scott graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1973 with a BA and in 1977 with a JD. In 2001, Judge Scott was appointed Circuit Judge for the 19th West Judicial District by Governor Mike Huckabee and in January 2009 began his second term as an elected official. He was elected unanimously by the other Circuit Judges as the Administrative Judge for the 19 West Judicial District in 2002 and has completed a third two-year term as Administrative Judge. Judge Scott is a member of the Arkansas Bar Association, and a member and past President of the Benton County Bar Association. He is active in the William B. Putman Inn of Court, and served as President in 2006. He is also active in the Arkansas Judicial Council, and was recently appointed by the Arkansas Supreme Court to the Supreme Court Child Support Committee, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Judicial Council. Judge Scott and his wife Sue have four children, and eight grandchildren. He and his wife are active in St. Theodore's Episcopal Church and many community activities.

About the Award:
The Angels in Adoption™ program is CCAI’s signature public awareness campaign and provides an opportunity for all members of the U.S. Congress to honor the good work of their constituents who have enriched the lives of foster children and orphans in the United States and abroad.
“The Angels in Adoption program is unlike any other program in the Nation’s Capitol. Because of it, over 1600 “Angels’ have come to share with Washington their adoption experience and left with a renewed excitement of all that adoption makes possible,” said Kathleen Strottman. “I learned one simple lesson from my time on the hill, knowledge is power. Angels in Adoption is meant to give Members of Congress the knowledge they need to use the power they have toward making the dream of a family a reality for every child.”

In addition to the more than 190 local angels from around the country, several National Angels will also be recognized at the ceremony and gala for their dedication and commitment nationally and internationally to child welfare on a grand scale. Former “National Angels” include First Lady Laura Bush, Patti LaBelle, Jane Seymour, Muhammad Ali, the late Dave Thomas, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bruce Willis, Alonzo Mourning, and Marcus Samuelsson.

The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) is a 501(c)3 nonpartisan organization dedicated to raising awareness about the tens of thousands of orphans and foster children in the United States and the millions of orphans around the world in need of permanent, safe, and loving homes through adoption. CCAI’s goal is the elimination of the barriers that hinder these children from realizing their basic right of a family.

CCAI was created in 2001 by the active co-chairs of the bicameral, bipartisan Congressional Coalition on Adoption (CCA) to more effectively raise Congressional and public awareness about the issue of adoption.

The Angels in Adoption™ program was established in 1999 as a Congressional press conference to honor outstanding individuals. Since then, the program has developed into a yearlong public awareness campaign culminating in an extraordinary awards Gala and celebration in Washington, D.C.

A SUMMER VISIT FROM THE GRAND KIDS (Submitted by Alyn & Jerry Gravatt)

You got to love it when the grand kids come to visit! Left to right (Coen - age 3, Jerry - aged somewhat, Alyn - aged nicely, Hadley - age 2)

Update on Ralph Scott from Lisa Horner (Aug 18th)

Daddy's surgery was a triple by pass 7/30 and it went great. Recovery has been a 2 step forward 1 step back process. Not uncommon. He went home day 13 and back to the hospital day 19, yesterday (Aug 17) This was a great decision as he already feels better. Primary recovery issues have been kidney function and fluid retention which both lead to breathing issues. We expect him home again in 2-3 days and hopefully the recovery process will speed up just a little:)

I'll share your best wishes and love today. Sorry we didn't get the word out as well as we should have. Mom had difficulty getting access to her email while at the hospital and I didn't even try!! Hope all is well with you guys. Love, Lisa

A Note concerning Ralph Scott - Surgery (from Lois Vasey via Mary K)

On July 30, our cousin Ralph Scott had bypass surgery. He has been recuperating at home and is now back in the hospital in Springfield, MO where he is being "fine tuned" after a little set-back. He is progressing just fine and docs are saying he will probably go home after the weekend (Aug.22). Mary Kay has asked me to give you this info-----she's just been too busy to get a note off to you, but assures everyone that he is weak, but feeling better each day.

Shady Lane Barn (Submitted by Lois Vasey)

Here is a posting for Linc's Link blog. We are also attaching two pictures; one of the Shady Ln barn taken recently and another of the house which we think was taken in 1905. My Mother is on the right side of the balcony and I don't know who is on the left.

I have not heard very many stories about life at Shady Lane when Abraham & Mary Effie Scott lived there with the children (Ed, Ruth, Monroe, Silvey, Ralph and Doris). I do remember my mother, Ruth, showing me the stable where her “little pony” was kept. And, how she and a girl friend would ride to school—each taking quarter-of-a-mile turns walking and riding the pony.

She also remembered when Silvey was a baby in the buggy and the children (Ed, Ruth and Monroe) took a walk up the road north of the house where there was a hill. The big memory was letting the buggy glide down the hill giving baby Silvey a fast ride. I’m sure that was embedded in her mind because they probably got a proper scolding for that.

My parents were married in the living room, under the stained glass window at Shady Lane. That window is still there and can be seen on the north side of the house. I tried to purchase that window several years ago, but had no luck.

I’d love to hear other stories the first cousins may have of life on the farm.

Stop … And Listen (By Ninan Shumate Scott) - Submitted by Deb Scott

You go out in the evening and look at the sky and see the stars, slowly wheeling not only through the night but through the year, the seasons. Star patterns unchanging throughout your lifetime, the same constellations, the same Pole Star and Dipper and Eagle and Swan. And you see the moon progressing through its phases, from the thinnest golden crescent of a new moon to the fat, silver roundness of a full moon, to the late-rising moon on the wane, shrunken and wan. Moon phases that have been known to man since he first looked at the night sky.
You see sunrise and sunset, varying by a few minutes day after day, time, the passage of the seasons, the lunar months, the solar year, the days. Time hasn’t changed a noticeable fraction of a second in ten million years! The first man who stood on two feet and watched the sunrise and had a glimmering of wonder about time knew the same span of daylight that we know today, the same year. Grass grew as deliberately then as now, and the berry ripened in its own time.
But somewhere along the way man began to count not only the days, but the hours, the minutes, the seconds. Time was unchanged, but man was caught in his own time traps. The very echoes came to say, “Hurry, hurry, hurry!” And only now and then did anyone stop and ask, “Why, and what for?”
And look at the sun and the grass and the trees and know that they weren’t hurrying, and sit down and listen. The soft whisper they heard was the same, flowing through the hourglass, the same flow it has had since time began.

A note from Lucy Pierce (Cashew Clusters)

I don't know if Greg Scott reads e-mail, but he had made some cashew clusters for
the hospitality room in June that people really enjoyed and if you're printing
recipes that would be a good one to include. Lucy Pierce

Greg - if you send it along we can get it out to everyone!

Trip to Montana by the Usserys/Voths (Silvey/Wilbur)

In May, just after the last day of school, the Ussery and Voth families (Cindy & Tammy are the daughters of Wilbur - son of Silvey) took a trip to Montana to visit with Burt and Cindy's daughter and family (Ron and Billie Wright). They live on the Burnt Leather Ranch outside of Big Timber, MT.
We took Natasha Voth's horse and our two gators. We already had two horses up there so there was plenty of riding and having fun. While there we took a two day trip through Yellowstone...it was beautiful...even with the scattered snow.
We saw all the wildlife, both at Yellowstone and right at the ranch...elk, deer, bear, and of course buffalo. It is just beautiful there.
Here are a few pics from the trip.....
Love to all!
